curate NYC is a month-long citywide festival of art exhibitions, and a permanent online showcase of New York City artists. The program builds exposure and career opportunities for local artists and markets New York City’s image as a cultural hub.
These 17 exhibiting artists were selected from 1,900 online entries.
Elisa Jensen is a figurative painter who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. In 2012 she was a finalist for the Basil Alkazzi Award for Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and has recently won awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the National Academy. She currently is a faculty member at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, and has shown her work recently at Woodward Gallery, Sideshow Gallery, the Governor’s Island Art Fair, all in New York City, Galleri Salling in Denmark, and Edelman Arts in New York City and Miami. Elisa Jensen Studied at the New York Studio School and Smith College.
Tommy Kwak’s ethereal and quiet photographs explore absence and the unknown in natural environments. His work has been shown in New York City and Iceland, most recently in a solo exhibition of Iceland-based photographs, at Schaefer Landing in Brooklyn, NY. He earned a BFA (Graphic Design) from California College of the Arts in 2002 and completed photography courses at International Center of Photography from 2006 to 2008. In 2010, Tommy participated in the SÍM Residency program in Reykjavik, Iceland, as well as the international arts festival, Villa Reykjavik. Tommy grew up outside of Chicago and now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He has been an active member of Fowler Arts Collective and SONYA (South of Navy Yard Artists) since 2011.
Karen Marston is a painter living and working in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her work has been seen in several solo exhibitions in NYC: Storm Watch, New Paintings at Storefront Bushwick, Breathing Room at Dam Stuhltrager Gallery in Williamsburg, Where You’ll Find Me at the Cheryl McGinnis Gallery, and Respirations, at Taller Boricua, in East Harlem. Recent selected group exhibitions include: In The Zone curated by David Gibson at Station Independent Projects on the Lower East Side, Bling, The Artist As Jeweler at the Claire Oliver Gallery in Chelsea, Montrose and Ballot, both at the Front Room Gallery in Williamsburg, and Paperazzi 1 & 2 at Janet Kurnatowski Gallery in Greenpoint among others. Marston also serves as the President of the Board of Trustees of NURTUREart Non-Profit where she was instrumental in the opening of the NURTUREart Gallery in Brooklyn, and hosts Muse Fuse, an informal monthly art salon with many notable guest speakers.Originally from California, she earned her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and participated in the A.I.C.A. New York Studio Program.
Juri Morioka is a Tokyo born painter, living in New York City. She received her BFA in Painting from Parsons School of Design in 1990, and has had solo shows in New York City, Tokyo, Dubai and Portland, Oregon, and a two-person show in Abu Dhabi. She has participated in group shows in New York City galleries such as Edward Thorp and Sideshow, at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and other cities in Texas, Florida, Michigan, South Carolina and Oregon; and in overseas galleries in UAE, Syria, Switzerland and Greece. Morioka has received grants from The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, The Ruth Chenven Foundation, The Puffin Foundation, The Institute for Civil Society, and The Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, along with a chashama artist-in-residence subsidized studio space grant and a full-fellowship residency at the Vermont Studio Center. Her works can be seen nationally and internationally at galleries in New York City, Portland, Sarasota, Damascus, Tokyo and Dubai. Juri Morioka's website is: www.juri.org
Leah Oates has a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and a M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a Fulbright Fellow for graduate study at Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Oates has had solo shows in New York City at Susan Eley Fine Arts, The Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, The Center for Book Arts, A4L Gallery, A Taste of Art Gallery and locally at Tomasulo Gallery in New Jersey, Real Art Ways in Connecticut, Sara Nightingale Gallery in Watermill, Long Island and at the Sol Mednick Gallery at the Philadelphia University of the Arts in Pennsylvania. In 2013, Oates was part group shows at 440 Gallery and Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn, Islip Art Museum in Islip, NY, Bob Rauschenberg Gallery in Florida, The Housatonic Museum in Connecticut, McNeese State University in Louisiana, Black Box Gallery in Oregon, Unsettled Gallery in New Mexico and at Abcedarian Gallery in Colorado. Oates’s work will be featured in The Mad Hat Review in Fall 2013. In 2012, Oates was part of group show at Denise Bibro Fine Arts, NYC, the Edward Hopper House in Nyack, NY, Momenta Art Gallery in Brooklyn and was part of an exhibition curated by The Humble Art Foundation with the Magenta Foundation for the Flash Forward Photography Festival in Boston, MA.
Carolyn Oberst originally pursued a career in NYC as a clothing designer and formed her own company specializing in women’s wear. She discovered a love of painting while creating her own fabrics using a brush with paints and dyes. This discovery led her to close her successful business in order to concentrate on fine art. She then studied painting and drawing at the Art Student’s League of NY and at the New York Studio School before setting up her own painting studio. Her work has been shown in one-person, two-person and group shows in various galleries and other venues in NYC and other American cities. Solo exhibitions include those at the Willoughby Sharpe Gallery, NYC, the Margaret Bodell Gallery, NYC, and M55 Art in LIC, NY. Recent exhibitions include a major two-person show at the Vit Gallery in Seoul, S. Korea (2011).
William Pagano is a New York based artist whose work explores architecture and its primary structural components, including volume, scale and light. Pagano earned a BA in art education at C.W. Post College and a MA in Art, concentration in sculpture, at Long Island University. After 32 years in art education, Pagano has reestablished his studio practice. Pagano has had a solo exhibition with Sara Nightingale Gallery and has been included in numerous group shows. His work has been featured in Hampton’s Magazine. Pagano lives and works in New York City and Water Mill, New York.
Olivié Ponce was born in Mexico City and trained in fine arts at the Universidad de Guanajuato (BFA). Currently Olivié lives and works in Brooklyn, New York since 2007. He was represented by FONCA (National Fund for the Culture and the Arts, Mexico) in 2001 and 2005. He participated at the NYFA Mentoring Program for Immigrant Artists in 2009. Olivie has exhibited his work in several international venues: Gallery Ho, Seoul Korea; The Brick Lane Gallery, London, UK; La Esmeralda Gallery, Mexico City. Olivié Ponce: Extra-Estetica was the artist's first solo gallery show in New York. He was awarded with a fellowship from the Dedalus Fundation, for an artistic residency at the internationally acclaimed Vermont Studio Center in 2011. Olivié’s artwork is featured at the movie "What Maisie Knew" With Julianne Moore & Alexander Skarsgard in 2013. On this year Ponce is showing paintings in two group shows at WHA Center and NURTUREart Benefit in Brooklyn.
Kristin Reed, born in Morristown, NJ has a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. In the 1980s she participated in the community mural movement in NY, painting large public murals in NYC and elsewhere. She has worked as a photojournalist, a graphic designer and a designer of projected images for theater. Currently she lives in Brooklyn and has a studio residency with chashama.org at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. In addition to her artistic career, Reed practices and teaches hands-on energy healing work, frequently traveling to Central and South America working with a humanitarian group, Healer2Healer.org, collaborating with indigenous Maya and Amazonian populations in acupuncture and Reiki clinics and training. Her work as a healer has greatly effected her painting.
Ritchard Rodriguez was born and raised in New York City, studied art under mentors Gilbert L. Stone and Jonathan Borofsky, migrated once west to the Rockies of Colorado for a year and a half, then east to Berlin, Hamburg and Paris for a duration of eight years. There he was represented by art dealers Michel Ozenne in Paris and Jan de Maere in Brussels, featured in solo shows and in the FIAC at the Grand Palais. During the years spent in France the paint took over as Rodriguez discovered freedom within his own abstraction, substituting figures with strokes or combinations of strokes, exploring the linen he faced with a preferable honesty, “painting from the heart and guts”. He made New York his home and work place once again, though likewise taking his art materials to tropical Brazil for many winters to come. The work segued as a result from an industrial edge that included collage and photography along with his oils, to that of pure abstractions, color and light. Rodriguez continues to exhibit nationally and internationally, even enjoying the success of being presented among 10 other artists who participated in Princess Stephanie of Monaco’s annual auction to raise funds for her charity, Fight AIDS Monaco.
Barry Rosenthal has lived New York City for the past 25 years. He studied photography at the Dayton Art Institute and also studied with notable photographers Emmet Gowin and George Tice. Barry‘s fine art images can be found in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Springfield Museum of Fine Art Springfield, Massachusetts. Barry is a resident of Lower Manhattan, along with his wife and daughter.
Toni Silber-Delerive: Born in Philadelphia, I received a B.F.A. in Painting from the Philadelphia College of Art and studied at the School of Visual Arts. A Manhattan-based artist and graphic designer, my work is featured in private and corporate collections and has been in many exhibitions including solo shows in New York e.g. James Beard House, Rockefeller Gallery, NY Studio Gallery in Chelsea, Interchurch Center, National Arts Club. A selection of group shows includes Pen and Brush Gallery, Dacia Gallery, The Chelsea Art Museum. Kaller Fine Arts in Washington, DC and Riverside Gallery in NJ. A solo show at Speakeasy Gallery. Sandra Taggart was born and raised in Chicago. Taggart now lives and works in Brooklyn. Taggart studied art at Washington University in St. Louis and continued at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned a BFA. After graduating, she lived in New Mexico for several years before finally settling in New York City. Taggart is a representational artist whose subjects range from psychological portraits to interpretations of the night sky and phenomena in the cosmos. Taggart has participated in numerous group exhibitions in the greater New York metropolitan area and in exhibitions across the country. She also appeared in Art Buzz and was a featured artist in New Art International in 2009. In 2010, she won the award for Best Acrylic Painting in “Wide Open” a BWAC sponsored exhibition in Brooklyn. Her sketchbook, “A Short History of the Universe” toured across the U.S. with the Brooklyn Art Library’s Sketchbook Project 2011. Currently, she is in a group exhibition at the Hammond Museum in Westchester.
Larissa Tokmakova Larissa Tokmakova grew up and studied painting in Russia and moved to New York in 1991. Her work has been exhibited at Chateau de la Napoule, Columbia University, Deloitte-Touche, Sao Paulo's Secreteria de Turismo i Cultura, Kunstcentrum Sitard, NYBD Budapest, and many other places. Currently she has 29 paintings on view in the lobby of The Public Theater in New York – a Tarot-based series commissioned for the month-long Mike Daisey monologue ALL THE FACES OF THE MOON. She has taught painting at Ateliers Fourwinds (France), the Hebei Academy (China), and is a faculty member of the St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn. This past winter Larissa appeared onstage in PS122's production of Kristen Kosmas's THERE, THERE, which will be revived this January at On The Boards in Seattle. Editor of the feature films HORRIBLE CHILD and the forthcoming WENDELL & THE LEMON, she lives and paints in Bushwick. Her work can be viewed online at www.tokmakova.com.
Rachael Wren received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from the University of Washington. Her work has been exhibited at Jeff Bailey Gallery, Geoffrey Young Gallery, The Painting Center, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery at Alfred University, among many others. Rachael is the recipient of the Julius Hallgarten Prize from the National Academy Museum and an Aljira Fellowship. She has been awarded residencies at Chashama North, the Saltonstall Foundation, the Byrdcliffe Art Colony, the Vermont Studio Center, the Anderson Center, and the Artist House at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Sichong Xie is a Chinese born artist, living in New York City. Chinese traditional culture and Communism have influenced on her work. Xie is currently enrolled at the Columbus College of Art & Design as a senior and will graduate in May 2013. She is now attending the New York Studio Residency Program in Dumbo, Brooklyn. She has also studied drawing, painting and printmaking at the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in China. Her current body of work explores: Chinese culture versus American culture, her female sex versus abstract sculptures, and Chinese Communist politics in relation to one-child-only generations. Her ironic performances depict herself isolated as a female in China within extreme natural landscapes, such as the Yinchuan desert and the Qin Shi Huang mausoleum. Xie’s practice deals with issues of identity, politics, cross-culturalism, and the surreal body of herself in the ever - changing environment.
Alice Zinnes has had seven solo exhibitions in New York City, including at Causey Contemporary Fine Art (Williamsburg, 2009), Galeria Janet Kurnatowski (Greenpoint, 2007), Tribes Gallery (NYC, 2002, 1998), and The Art Center at Queens College, which held a 25-year retrospective of her career (2002). She also has had one-person shows at Dartmouth and Swarthmore Colleges, and the Alliance Gallery in Narrowsburg, NY. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, New York Newsday, New York Arts Magazine, Art New England, and The Queens Tribune. She has received awards from the National Academy of Design, and fellowships from the Virginia Center for the Arts as well as from the Cummington Community for the Arts. In 2006 she was twice given extensive interviews on National Public Radio’s affiliate station, WJFF. As one of the first activists to warn the east coast of the dangers of fracking, Zinnes has curated/co-curated and organized numerous art events, including the seminal show and panel discussion, Fracking: Art and Activism Against The Drill, at Exit Art, in 2010-11. She received her BA from Swarthmore College, a Certificate of Merit from the New York Studio School, her MFA from Queens College, CUNY, and attended the Skowhegan School on a full merit scholarship. From CUNY she has received a CUNY By-Law PhD.
