Creases and Flecks on the Map presents a series of paintings using figuration and self-portrait as the primary subjects. The artist’s use of saturated color, blended forms, lush surfaces and a fluid line convey a love of pure painting. The figurative work, inspired by 19th century French sculpture, may be ambiguously perceived as still life or landscape.  Shapes turn, float and ride the plane.  Her self-portraits explore a mirrored character of self, inside and out.  The paintings of Buddha reflect the artist’s longtime Zen practice.  Applying the themes of one’s life with references to image, body and spirit Creases and Flecks on the Map traces the path of personal expression with no separation between form and content. 

 

Artist’s Bio:

Catherine Newman is a painter living and working in Harlem. Newman came to New York in 1977 after receiving an MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute college of Art. In addition to painting, she has also been involved in the music business, documentary films, television, and feature films. She is also a long time student of Zen Buddhism. Recent projects and events include HOAST, the Harlem Open Artist Studio Tour in 2007, 2009 and 2010; the group shows “Evolution: The Changing Face of Harlem” at Columbia University Medical School in 2008 and in “Serpentina” at Casa Frela Gallery, in 2009. In 2010 she participated in exhibitions with ArtHarlem, Casa Frela and SAC. In 2011 she also participated with SAC, the Striver Art Circuit.
