Artist Bio:
Jacob Sorkin believes in an immersive art experience where physical, emotional and intellectual interactions are of the utmost importance. His portfolio includes painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and performance, and single pieces often combine many or all of these studies. He believes that any piece, like any individual, exists as an amalgamation of interrelated and disparate pieces that coalesce into a single entity.
Sorkin’s pieces result from a philosophical grounding in individualism. He tackles and dismantles cultural and societal institutions such as beauty, gender, religion, and consumerism while toying with various visual constructs. Sorkin's aesthetic falls between the poles of abstraction and representation, due to his attempts to marry the emotionally visceral nature of an abstract work with the rich ideological concepts behind more representative styles. Within his work, Sorkin attempts to subvert and distort in order to mirror the process of existence in modern culture. He sees this process as its own art form, where society (as the artist) attempts to create artworks (people) that fit its current aesthetic demands. According to Sorkin's philosophy, existing as a human in this age is to engage in a massive art project.
Sorkin's exploration of process-as-art led him to view his own process as deeply integral to and inseparable from his work. He began to explore the relationship between process and the philosophies of determinism and free will, and began to allow chaos and spontaneity to inform and co-create his work. Sorkin also began to explore the performative aspects of the creation of his visual artworks. His involvement with performance art increased quickly, and he has written and performed in full-scale happening-esque pieces such as Grapefruit and the upcoming Captivity (June 6th 2013), as well as smaller for-film pieces such as Desire.
Jacob Sorkin will attend the Rhode Island School of Design in Fall 2013.
