Casimir Effect is pleased to present You Are Not Alone, an abstract painting exhibition curated by Jackie Meier and Lisa Taliano. It is the inaugural show of an artist-run project space/time/mattering on the Upper East Side.
The abstract paintings in this show are a representation of the world from within – matter painted as a dynamic and shifting entanglement of relations. In whatever combination of diffuse or sharply defined areas of color, gestural marks, systematic strokes, biomorphic forms or geometric shapes, the flatness of the surface is always considered. In a diffractively defined net of inscriptions, that creates a lively and indeterminate fluctuation of things that come in and out of being, these paintings compress the space between subject and object in a move that reveals space to be a charged field of energy and potentiality.
About Casimir Effect
Casimir Effect is a collaborative project space/time/mattering that will connect artists to thinkers from other disciplines to explore our current unique moment in human/geological history. We are defined by indeterminacy and the conditions of precarity of life in the age of ecological and economic crises. The opening show, You Are Not Alone, is a call for solidarity to re-imagine the world through what we make together, to create new ways to represent the world at a time when our old representations are no longer sustainable.
This first show includes artists: Kylie Heidenheimer, Pinkney Herbert, Erick Johnson, Jackie Meier, Laura Newman, Pierre Obando, Jennifer Riley, Russell Roberts, Lisa Taliano and Chuck Webster. It is a celebration and recognition of the artists’ indebtedness to each other as friends and painters. Companions in conflict and collaboration, the artists in this show are tied together by the threads of making, thinking and doing, entangled in a painting dialog, bound together in a knotted net of past, present, and yet to come.
About the Artists
Chuck Webster is represented by Steven Zevitas in Boston and Los Angeles. He has work in many museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney. He was the National Academy Fellow at the American Academy in Rome in 2018. He will have an upcoming show of prints at the Met Mezzanine Gallery in 2019. He lives and works in Brooklyn. Erick Johnson (b. San Francisco, 1959) is a New York based artist, photographer & curator. Johnson has shown nationally & internationally and his work has earned critical attention for his solo shows in New York and Washington DC where he is represented by Gallery Neptune & Brown. He also had a 2015 solo show at the IUCAD Arts Center in Columbus, IN. Johnson recently co-curated “Double Vision” a show about photography & artmaking practices, which was shown at LABspace in Hillsdale, NY in 2017 and then at the Hudson Valley Community College Teaching Gallery in Troy, NY in early 2019. His work is in numerous private collections. He studied at the School of Visual Arts and received an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School for the Arts- Bard College, 2005.He lives in NYC with his wife & 14-year-old daughter. Jackie Meier (b. 1966 Rochester, NY) started painting in 2000 at the California College of Arts, San Francisco, CA. Meier then moved to New York where she attending Pratt Institute obtaining her MFA with honors. Meier has had multiple solo and two person shows, including Nancy Margolis Gallery, Kenise Barnes Fine Art and Janet Kurnatowski Gallery. Her bold geometric abstractions are held in numerous collections throughout New York and Europe. Meier teaches art to both adults and children at Concordia College in Bronxville NY and The Pelham Art Center. Jennifer Riley (born and raised in Sharon CT, 1965) is based in New York and Indiana. Her color rich abstract paintings have garnered attention across the US since she began exhibiting her work in 1992. In her own words about the new work Riley. Writes: “In making images that engage with specific historical figures artist such as Gorky, Turner or Frankenthaler that combine multiple approaches and styles, I see the challenge of expanding the boundaries and invigorate the relevance of abstract painting. As the eye seeks to find form, a sense of location, a hint of content, it will eventually discover the ordering principle that structures everything on my canvas. What happens if this is contradicted by evidently free and open improvisation? Kylie Heidenheimer (b. Gainesville, Florida) grew up in St. Louis and now lives and works in New York City. She has had solo shows at Galerie Gris in Hudson (2015 and 2013), Thomas Jaeckel Gallery, NYC, Ohio Northern University and The Italian Academy at Columbia University. Heidenheimer has participated in group exhibitions at 56 Henry, Thomas Jaeckel Gallery, Feature, Inc, Storefront Bushwick, Station Independent Projects and Janet Kurnatowski and has attended residencies at Yaddo, Blue Mountain Center, VCCA and the Millay Colony. Laura Newman is an abstract painter who lives and works in Brooklyn. She has received fellowships and awards from The American Academy in Rome, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Yaddo, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, The New York Foundation on the Arts and Vassar College. She recently had a solo exhibition at Victoria Munroe Fine Art, New York , and a two-person exhibition along with Marcy Rosenberg at 490 Atlantic Gallery, Brooklyn. In 2017, her paintings were the subject of a solo exhibition at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, curated by Barry Rosenberg, Director of Contemporary Galleries. Other exhibitions include Jen Bekman Gallery, 1 GAP Gallery, NSCAD University, Lesley Heller Workspace, Bellwether Gallery, Victoria Munroe Gallery and group shows at 72 Front Street, The Shirley Fiterman Art Center, Arena, Art 101, Brian Morris Gallery, Fordham University, The National Academy of Art, The Weatherspoon Museum of Art and The New Museum, among others. Lisa Taliano lives and works in New York City. She received an MFA from Boston University and an MA in Philosophy from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is currently being represented by GUT Gallery, Dallas, TX. Lisa has had multiple solo and two/three person shows, including Ten43 Gallery, Kenise Barnes Fine Art and GAGA Arts Center. In 2018, she was a resident at Arte Studio Ginestrelle, in Assisi, Italy. Lisa co-curated Eating Painting at Project:ARTspace NYC in 2015 with James Biederman. Pierre Obando was born in Belize City, Belize, and grew up in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Miami, Fl and Jackson, MS. He completed his MFA at Hunter College, New York City. He works primarily in the mediums of painting, drawing and photography. Pierre has had a solo exhibition at Heskin Contemporary, New York, NY, in 2008; Rush Arts Gallery, New York, NY in 2009; and Thierry Goldberg Gallery, New York, NY, in 2015. Pinkney Herbert was born in Charlotte, NC in 1954. He received his BA from Rhodes College and his MFA from the University of Memphis. Mr. Herbert is the recipient of Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Tennessee Arts Commission, and USIA-Arts America. He has participated in numerous art exhibitions throughout the US, Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia. His art is in the permanent collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, Memphis Brooks Museum, and the Arkansas Arts Center. He is represented by David Lusk Gallery, Memphis; Boyd Satellite, New Orleans; and Greg Thompson Fine Arts, Little Rock. He is a fellow and board member of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA), Amherst, VA, and VCCA-France, Auvillar, France. He is the founder and director of Marshall Arts, an alternative gallery established in 1992 in Memphis, TN. He maintains studios in Memphis and New York. For 2013 – 2014, he has been awarded a year-long studio as part of the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation’s Space Program, Brooklyn, NY. In 2018, he became a member of AAA, American Abstract Artists.
In the Fall of 2012, Mr. Herbert taught painting and drawing at the University of Georgia Study Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. He has taught at the University of Tennessee, the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts, Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School, the University of Memphis, and the Memphis College of Art. He has been a visiting artist at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, Hanoi University of Fine Arts, and the Oberfalzer Kuntzlerhaus, Schwandorf, Germany. Russell Roberts lives and works in New York City. He graduated from Vassar College, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and received and an MFA from Boston University in 1995. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Painting in 1997, a grant from the Mass Arts Council in 2002 and an Albee Foundation Fellowship in 2006 and 2008, among others. He was the Artist-in-Residence at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2003. Roberts exhibited at Heskin Contemporary, NY, and also had solo exhibitions at SUNY Binghamton University, NY, UNC Chapel Hill, NC, Farrell- Pollock Gallery, NY, and Boston University.
