At the intersection of theater, performance and visual art, “Hankie Bank: Boundaries are of Equal Length” reimagines what used to be a Citi-bank, into a conceptual pop-up shop re-evaluating the institution, reflecting the value of handkerchief’s S/S15 collection – Square Paintings – with NASDAQ real-time stock exchange aka “future stocks”. In the new performance piece, presented from October 16-19th at chashama’s 1155 Ave of the Americas, artist Amy Cheung (Creative Director and cofounder of handkerchief) will be perched in the center of the Bank’s atrium, metamorphosed as a giant bug Queen. Cheung’s costume, a recent work of art by the design team at handkerchief’s Hong Kong studio, will be illuminated and draped across the window-front facing a bustling Ave of the Americas luring visitors to participate. Throughout the week, the former Citi-bank will be host to specially commissioned performance art and site-specific installations by multi-media artists working across a broad spectrum of disciplines including: Amy Cheung, Erkka Nissinen, Chris Woebken, Stephan Moore and David Lo.
In the style of avant-garde theater, visitors are invited to participate in a fully immersive experience – the ritual of worshipping Bug Queen, offering their memory, time, or other non-monetary items in exchange for “future stocks” produced by handkerchief’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Inspired by Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’, the Bug Queen of the new institution will be served by 5 bank workers: Miss Bank (wood element), Miss Cost-cutter (water element), Miss Trader (fire element), Miss Shit Pearl (soil element), Miss Collector (gold element), and Miss Indebter, who is the alter-ego of all the characters. They will all be dressed in lavishly unique costumes characteristic of the handkerchief label, expressive of each character’s traits. As the visitor encounters each bank worker, the story unravels to his/her own experience.
Occupying two levels of the former Citi-bank at 1155 Ave of the Americas in midtown Manhattan, Boundaries are of Equal Length will offer engaging and thought-provoking perspectives on the long-established banking and trading systems. Finnish video artist Erkka Nissinen and Hong Kong based coding artist David Lo creates a set of striking moving images reappropriating NASDAQ’s stock market algorithms with real-time value of Hankie stocks. The Hankie currency and its bank notes will readily be available for withdrawal, as visitors make their way from Miss Shit Pearl to Miss Collector.
On display in the rear gallery are limited edition square paintings – core pieces from handkerchief’s S/S15 collection under the same title Boundaries are of Equal Length – available for purchase throughout the show period. The show concludes with a finale sales event – all pieces from the collection Boundaries are of Equal Length on display will be available for purchase.
