Lydian Junction creates intense, irreverent, interdisciplinary live art.  For this residency, the audience will be invited to watch and participate in their open creation process.

BORN FOR NOTHING is Lydian Junction’s newest experiment in creation. Inspired in part by two seemingly disparate source materials/ideas: Knut Hamsun’s novel, HUNGER, in which a writer starves himself in pursuit of his work and New York City’s current relationship to sea-water which threatens to engulf us all. The goal: to investigate the contemporary connection between art and suffering/sacrifice in late global capitalism.

Looking at this source material through a personal lens and with a metaphorical point of view, the artists of Lydian Junction are exploring the following: how an individual encounters a city, New York City as the Wild West, the challenge of being fully present in the moment and taking action, the value of adhering to routine versus rebelling against routine, the negotiation of space, struggles that come with attempting to survive as a solitary individual versus in solidarity with a group, what happens to the body when we’re really hungry, and on the micro/macro level: how a person’s minute everyday actions can lead to monumental moments of change for an entire civilization. Ultimately, BORN FOR NOTHING will be a large-scale evening length mixed-media performance; this work will be further developed at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in 2014.

Lydian Junction is a cohort of five artists working at the intersection of performance, video art, installation, music and dance: director Sarah Cameron Sunde, dancer Dages Juvelier Keates, video artist Karla Carballar, composer Christopher Berg, and actor Oliver Burns. The artists of Lydian Junction each have between 14-40 years of experience working locally and internationally in their individual mediums.  They came together in 2011 to experiment with cross-discipline form and content creation. Since then, they have developed durational and site-specific performances for 3LD Art & Technology Center and Brooklyn Arts Exchange (WHAT COUNTS), The End (UNTITLED #4), Cornelia Street Cafe (UNTITLED #4.5), Hybrid Theatreworks (REVOLUTION), Figment Festival on Governor's Island (TO THE TABLE) and most recently New Georges’ The Room (SATAN IN DRAG). Their work will soon be featured in the upcoming second edition of a new art-book/magazine about theatrical design, CHANCE.
