In Julie Mauskop’s work, there is a duet in process between the physical body and the dreams that inhabit and motivate those bodies. This slow and graceful dance informs her process as she contemplates tender and intimate relationships. More often than not, the relationships are ones of protection, and so layer upon layer of material are attached to each other via stitching, glue, or paint. Forgoing canvas, Mauskop uses fabrics typically found in garment construction, further connecting the materials of her works to the body.
This exhibit features works within the traditional rectilinear frame, and the new direction the artist is now exploring: free form pieces mounted directly to the wall.
Artist info:
Julie Mauskop is a graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in painting. She holds a Masters degree from NYU Steinhardt and has also studied at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel. She creates videos and installations in addition to her painted works.
