A Place Within
Natália De Matos Oliani

A Place Within is a solo presentation by the artist Natália De Matos Oliani, featuring her most recent works created between 2022 and 2024. This collection continues her Dialogue series, in which she uses abstraction to explore the emotional landscapes of her subjects—including friends, her husband, and herself—drawing inspiration from conversations with them.

Originated during the Covid-19 pandemic in Florianópolis, Brazil, the Dialogue series encapsulates the artist’s creative process: establishing genuine connections with and between people by constructing a space of shared emotions.

Natália’s creative journey begins with personal conversations with her subjects, which are then translated into large-scale paintings. This process is deeply introspective and collaborative, requesting the artist to unpack the unspoken words and body language of her subjects. By granting shapes and colors to these conversations, the artist creates a tangible space before our eyes, where an intricate web of emotions becomes a visceral experience. Simultaneously, this space exists within our shared imagination, where people’s feelings intertwine and inspire deeper connections.
