Kevin Lustik

The artist Kevin Lustik works in the sewing idiom. All of his pieces involve thread, yarn, beads, buttons, even pins and needles, giving his work a 3-D effect.

Lustik utilizes elements of folk aesthetics as a vehicle for incisive observations on politics, semantics, and consumerism. Lustik’s stitching also includes humorous motifs, including Facebook emojis, an unraveling cassette tape, and a meta-self-portrait of Lustik sewing himself.

About the Artist
Kevin Lustik was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, and has been sewing for over 30 years. He started by creating quilts, then moved on to original needlepoint and cross-stitch designs.

Lustik is self-taught and approaches each design as if it were an oil painting. Lustik’s medium, though, is needlework: His paints are yarn and thread. His brush is a needle. And his canvas is cloth. In many ways his artwork may be compared to Pointillism, a style of late 19th century painting, which uses colorful dots to create an image. Through Lustik’s work, stitch by stitch, one’s eye completes the picture and an image emerges, a face, a tree, a map.

Lustik has exhibited at the Leslie-Lohman Project Space, Blick Art Supply Store, many branches of the New York Public Library, and with the Garment District Alliance. Lustik currently resides in New York City.
